If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assembly better than it. And if he draws near to Me an arm’s length, I draw near to him a cubit, and if he draws near to Me a cubit, I draw near to him a fathom. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.”

“By Allah, certainly We have sent to nations before you but made fair-seeming to them the Shaitaan their deeds. So he (is) their ally today, and for them (is) a punishment painful.”

Allahumma inni as aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuka, wa hubba kulle ‘amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbikaO Allah! I ask You for Your love and the love of those who love You, and for the love of every action which will bring me closer to Your love.

10 ways you can get closer to Allah

You won’t be able to come close to Allah SWT overnight. Rather, you will notice certain signs which give you an idea that you’re getting closer to Allah. In fact, Allah gives this honor to only certain individuals. It includes selected people either chosen from birth or because of certain good deeds they perform.

Get closer to Allah

We shall discuss with you a few signs that show you’re an ‘Awliya’ (friend of Allah SWT)

1. People who love Allah SWT

Every individual craves the love of Allah SWT. They require the love of the almighty. But are all of you prepared to love Allah SWT back?

Awliya are those lucky individuals who truly love the Almighty. This is not because he is more powerful or can punish them anytime. They simply love Allah because they want the Almighty to always be pleased with them.

It is mentioned in the Holy Quran –

“And among the mankind who takes from besides Allah equals. They love them as (they should) love Allah. And those who believe[d] (are) stronger (in) love for Allah. And if would see those who wronged, when they see the punishment that the power (belongs) to Allah all and [that] Allah (is) severe (in) [the] punishment.”

– Surah Al-Baqarah; Verse 165

2. People who remind you of Allah SWT

It was reported in a Hadith when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was asked about an Awliya’s characteristics.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said –

“Those who, if they are seen, remind you of Allah. Shall I not tell you about the worst of you?”
“Those who carry gossip and ruin relations between loved ones, seeking misery for the innocent”

– Majmauz-Zawaid; # 13140

Simply being in the presence of  Awliyas can significantly increase your faith.

3. People who neither fear nor grief

It has been mentioned in the Holy Quran –

“No doubt! Indeed, (the) friends (of) Allah (there will be) no fear upon them and not they will grieve.”

–   Ayah Yunus; Verse 62

4. People who feel fear upon hearing the verse of Allah SWT

Allah SWT mentioned in the Quran

“Only the believers (are) those who, when mentioned of Allah, feel fear in their hearts, and when recited to them His Verses, they increase them (in) faith, and upon their Lord, they put their trust.”

Surah Al Anfal; Verse 2

5. People who continuously make Tawbah

Believers who are close to Allah SWT continuously repent for their sins. They never underestimate the magnitude of any sin, irrespective of how small it may seem. Also, they have constant fear within themselves of doing something wrong.

6. People who constantly remember Allah SWT

The closest ones to Allah are the ones who are conscious about their creator at all times. As mentioned in the Holy Quran –

“Those who believe and find satisfaction in their hearts in the remembrance (of) Allah. No doubt, in the remembrance (of) Allah finds satisfaction in the hearts.”
Ayah Ar-Ra’d; Verse 28

Their hearts remain attached to the Almighty.

7. Such people talk little

As Muslims, we remain accountable for uttering every single word. This is exactly why the people who are closest to Allah SWT engage in conversations less. They only spoke when necessary.

During their silence, they remember Allah SWT.

8. People who love for the sake of Allah SWT

People who Allah considers to be closest to him love what the Almighty loves. Similarly hates what Allah SWT hates. Likewise, these people are friends with pious people and the ones who fear Allah SWT.

They never associate themselves with bad company. They prefer being alone to that of being in the presence of bad company, all this for the sake of Allah SWT.

9. Charitable people

The ones who are friends with Allah SWT are charitable. They are very generous and only keep things that are necessary for themselves.

10. People who possess Piety

It is mentioned within the Holy Quran –

“Those who believe and are conscious (of Allah)”
Surah Yunus; Verse 63

Piety, otherwise known as Taqwa has many meanings. This includes faith and consciousness towards Allah SWT. People who are friends with Allah SWT constantly contemplate the hereafter.

Also, they think about entities such as hell, death & heaven.

Benefits of Getting Closer to Allah

Seeking closeness to Allah SWT is a sign that the Almighty wants you to remember him at all times. As a Muslim, it is of utmost importance that you remain productive. This is a sign that Allah SWT has mercy upon you. It also means that he wants you to attain knowledge beneficially.

It is said that righteous deeds are like pearl necklaces. If the necklace breaks, then one pearl follows the other instantly.

It was reported by Abu Hurairah that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said –

“I live in the thought of My servant as he thinks about Me, and I am with him, as he remembers Me. And if he remembers Me in his heart, I also remember him in My Heart, and if he remembers Me in the assembly I remember him in the assembly, better than he (does that), and if he draws near Me by the span of a palm I draw near him by the cubit, and if he draws near me by the cubit I draw near him by the space (covered by) two hands. And if he walks towards Me, I rush towards him.”
– Sahih Muslim; Book 48, Hadith 28

To achieve greater things, you’ll have to struggle. The harder you struggle, the better will be the outcome.

It’ll take significant time for you to get closer to Allah SWT. Your one righteous deed cannot put everything in place, instantly. You must depend on and trust Allah SWT at all times. Allah SWT has planned for you what’s best in this life and the hereafter.

Talking to Allah at night or Praying Tahajjud

Allah SWT said –

“Ask me, and I will answer you.”-
Surah Al Ghaffar; Verse 60

“Remember me and I’ll remember you”-
Surah Al Baqarah; Verse 152

The 3 ideal ways you can talk to Allah SWT at night is –

  1. Namaz (Prayer)
  2. Offer Dua (Supplication)
  3. Perform Zikr (Remembrance)

According to another Hadith, Allah SWT mentioned that –

“I am just as My slave thinks I am, (ie I can do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if He remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I too, remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better than they; and if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running”
– Sahih Al Bukhari; Book 97, Hadith 34

Another ideal way of talking to Allah SWT is to pray Tahajjud during nighttime.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to get up during the night for offering Tahajjud.

He used to say –

Allahumma lakal-hamd. Anta qaiyyimus-samawati wal-ard wa man fihinna. Walakal-hamd, Laka mulkus-samawati wal-ard wa man fihinna. Walakal-hamd, anta nurus-samawati wal-ard. Wa lakal-hamd, anta-l-haq wa wa’duka-lhaq, wa liqa’uka Haq, wa qauluka Haq, wal-jannatu Han wan-naru Haq wannabiyuna Haq. Wa Muhammadun, sallal-lahu’alaihi wasallam, Haq, was-sa’atu Haq. Allahumma aslamtu Laka wabika amantu, wa ‘Alaika tawakkaltu, wa ilaika anabtu wa bika khasamtu, wa ilaika hakamtu faghfir li ma qaddamtu wama akh-khartu wama as-rartu wama’a lantu, anta-l-muqaddim wa anta-l-mu akh-khir, la ilaha illa anta (or la ilaha ghairuka

All the praises are for You; You are the Light of the Heavens and the Earth and all the praises are for You; You are the King of the Heavens and the Earth, and all the praises are for You; You are the Truth and Your Promise is the truth, and to meet You is true, Your Word is the truth and Paradise is true and Hell is true and all the Prophets (Peace be upon them) are true, And Muhammad is true, And the Day of Resurrection is true.

O, Allah! I surrender (my will) to You; I believe in You and depend on You. And repent to You, and with Your help, I argue (with my opponents, the non-believers) And I take You as a judge (to judge between us). Please forgive me my previous and future sins; And whatever I concealed or revealed and You are the One who make (some people) forward and (some) backward. There is none to be worshipped but you. Sufyan said that `Abdul Karim Abu Umaiya added to the above, ‘Wala haula Wala quwata illa billah’ (There is neither might nor power except with Allah).

“My Lord! I seek refuge with You from the whisperings (suggestions) of the Shayatin (devils). And I seek refuge with You, My Lord! lest they may attend (or come near) me.”
