Purify Yourself

Allah SWT blessed us with the final messenger, Prophet Muhammad PBUH. He helped all Muslims to receive wisdom & attain divine knowledge. Prophet Ibrahim PBUH made the following supplication to Allah SWT –

Our Lord! Raise from among them a messenger who will recite to them Your revelations, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them. Indeed, You ˹alone˺ are the Almighty, All-Wise

–       Surah Al Baqarah; Verse 129

Allah SWT responded to the supplication of Prophet Ibrahim’s by sending Prophet Muhammad PBUH –

“Indeed, God bestowed a favor upon the believers when he raised in their midst an apostle from among themselves, to convey His messages unto them, and to cause them to grow in purity, and to impart unto them the divine writ as well as wisdom – whereas before that they were true, most obviously, lost in error”

–       Surah Al Imran; Verse 164

Purifying yourself internally & externally

Teachings of Prophet Muhammad PBUH made us understand the necessity of purifying ourselves. You must sincerely ask Allah’s guidance to be purified.

“It is You we worship, and it is You we seek for help.”

–       Surah Al Fatiha; Verse 5

Ask Allah SWT for help –

Prophet Muhammad PBUH asked all believers to recite the following verse –

Allāhumma Āti Nafsī Taqwāhā wa Zakkihā Anta Khayru man Zakkāhā Anta Waliyyuhā wa Mawlāhā

“O Allah, grant my soul its piety and purify it, You are the Best to purify it, You are its Guardian and Master.”

–       Sahih Muslim

Surround yourself with the Quran

The simplest thing you can do to purify yourself is to recite and surround yourself with the holy Quran. As Muslims; it is of utmost importance that we recite the Holy Quran. This ensures that there isn’t any stain on our hearts.

Allah SWT said in the Holy Quran –

“We send down the Quran as a healing and mercy for the believers, but it only increases the wrongdoers in a loss.”

You should recite the Quran. Also, reflect upon the name of Allah SWT, because this is a Sunnah.

Prophet Muhammad PBUH said –

“I am as My servant thinks I am (1). I am with him when he makes mention of Me. If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assembly better than it. And if he draws near to Me an arm’s length, I draw near to him a cubit, and if he draws near to Me a cubit, I draw near to him a fathom. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed. (1) Another possible rendering of the Arabic is: “I am as My servant expects Me to be”

–       Sahih Muslim.

How to purify your mind? And how to purify yourself?

“The Day when neither wealth nor children will be of any benefit.”

–       Surah Ash-Shu’ara’; Verse 88

Your successes in this life and the hereafter depend on the purification of your hearts. You must take all necessary measures to purify your heart from sins such as; greed, arrogance, malice, and envy. Instead, you must fill your heart with virtues such as humility, generosity & compassion.

How to cleanse your mind of dirty thoughts?

It is important that you understand the prohibitions in the Quran and make it a habit to reflect upon them. Make it a habit to pray the 5 obligatory prayers and recite the Quran daily and always be mindful of performing righteous deeds. This will ensure that you attain the blessings of Allah SWT. Make a habit of being honest, not lying. If you perform evil deeds and surround yourself with evil company, then hatred will arise in your heart.

As stated in the Holy Quran –

They have hearts but they understand not therewith, and they have eyes but they see not therewith, and they have ears but they hear not therewith

– Surah Al A’raf;

If we’re able to purify ourselves, then Allah SWT will reward us with Jannah –

“The Gardens of Eternity, under which rivers flow, where they will stay forever. That is the reward of those who purify themselves.”

–       Surah Taha; Verse 76

Being obedient to Allah SWT & gaining useful Islamic knowledge is a means of self-purification of your soul. This is stated by Islamic scholars.

No human being can claim self-purification of their souls without the help of Allah SWT.

“Have you ˹O Prophet˺ not seen those who ˹falsely˺ elevate themselves? It is Allah who elevates whoever He wills. And none will be wronged ˹even by the width of˺ the thread of a date stone.”

–       Surah Al Nisa; Verse 49

Allah SWT has prohibited all humans from claiming themselves to be purified. Allah says –

“Those who avoid great sins and the immoralities except the small faults; indeed, your Lord (is) vast (in) forgiveness. He (is) most knowing about you when He produced you from the earth and when you (were) fetuses in (the) wombs (of) your mothers. So (do) not ascribe purity (to) yourselves. He knows best (he) who fears.”
