Surah Nisa Ayat about Marriage

Meaning
If you fear that you might not treat the orphans justly, then marry the women that seem good to you: two, or three, or four.4 If you fear that you cannot treat them justly, then marry (only) one,5 or marry from among those whom your right hands possess.6 This will make it more likely that you will avoid injustice.

- Surah An Nisa; Verse 3

The above verse states, that if you cannot give orphan girls their necessary rights upon marrying them, then you should marry other women of your preference. You may marry 2, 3, or 4 women.

However, if you feel as though you cannot maintain justice, then you should be content with one or those ‘bondwomen’ who are in your possession.

This will ensure that you do not commit any injustice.

Surah for Marriage in the Quran

Marriage is a unique experience for all Muslims. If you’re destined to get married, you’ll meet your other half (marriage partner) when the time is right.

Allah SWT has created us in pairs. The almighty has instilled love in our hearts.

Quoting from Surah Ibn Majah –

"There is nothing like marriage, for the two who love one another.”

- Ibn Majah; Verse; Vol. 3; Book 9; Hadith 1847.

If you are not married, that doesn’t mean you lack iman. There are many notable figures in Islam who did not get married life. Maryan A.S. is one of the best examples of women who belong in paradise.

Getting Married means you’re fulfilling the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad PBUH

The following hadith mentions what Prophet Muhammad PBUH said –

“Marriage is part of my Sunnah, and whoever does not follow my Sunnah has nothing to do with me. Get married, for I am heartened by your great numbers before the nations.”

- Ibn Majah; Vol. 3; Book 9; Hadith 1846

Prophet Muhammad PBUH encouraged all Muslims to marry if you’re capable. He did not encourage the idea of celibacy. To prove your devotion to Islam, you do not have to practice celibacy.

Prophet Muhammad PBUH stated that the ones who will reject his way of life will not remain amongst him. However there were some Islamic scholars who did not get married.

They pursued knowledge throughout their lifetime. This meant they could not get married during their lifetime.

Marriage was a practice amongst all prophets A.S. & messengers of Allah SWT

"Four are from the practices of the Messengers: modesty, the use of perfume, the use of the tooth-stick, and marriage"

- Sunan At Tirmizi

Prophet Muhammad PBUH and all other messengers who arrived before him got married as well.

Marriage will bring you mercy & tranquility

“And among His Signs (is) that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you love and mercy. Indeed, in that surely (are) Signs for a people who reflect.”

- Surah Ar-Rum; Verse 21

Allah SWT created spouses for all of you amongst yourselves. You will find peace with them. Allah has placed mercy & affection between spouses.

Allah SWT has made spouses like garments for each other

“Your spouses are a garment for you as you are for them”

- Surah Al Baqarah; Verse 187

In an ideal marriage, spouses should beautify and protect each other. By ‘garment’ it means couples should protect & comfort each other. Marriage is a commitment of a lifetime. Spouses need to bring comfort and joy to each other during marriage.

Islamic Principles when you seek a spouse

Below are some of the Islamic principles you should follow when seeking a spouse.

What does the Quran say about marriage?

1. You need to ask yourself, “Why do I want to get married?

Just because your friends are settling down should not be your sole reason to settle down. You should also ask this question to the person you meet for marriage. This will give you a reminder of the purpose behind marriage from an Islamic point of view.

Marriage is a very important part of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Sunnah. This is crucial for our faith. Your intention for marriage should be to find someone who can build a prosperous family with you.

You need to consider marriage as a commitment that begins in this life and it will continue in the hereafter.

2. You need to ask yourself, “What am I searching for in an ideal spouse?

Prophet Muhammad PBUH mentioned –

Men select women for 4 reasons –

Money
● Rank
● Beauty
● Religion

He advised Muslim men to marry women who are religious. This will bring them success. Muslim women should also choose to marry pious men. You must always prioritize your potential partner’s faith and religion above everything else.

If you want to have a prosperous Muslim family, then you have to prioritize your deen. You should also remember, marriage is half your deen

3. Lower your gaze as you’re searching for your ideal spouse

When searching for your ideal spouse, you have every right to be on the lookout for the right attributes. It is also important for the person to be physically attractive. But you need to lower your gaze.

Quoting from the Holy Quran –

Meaning
And say to the believing women (that) they should lower [of] their gaze and they should guard their chastity, and not (to) display their adornment except what is apparent of it. And let them draw their head covers over their bosoms, and not (to) display their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers or fathers (of) their husbands or their sons or sons (of) their husbands or their brothers or sons (of) their brothers or sons (of) their sisters, or their women or what possess their right hands or the attendants having no (of) physical desire among [the] men or [the] children who (are) not aware of private aspects (of) the women. And not let them stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah altogether O believers! So that you may succeed.

- Surah An-Nur; Verse 31

Looking at your potential spouse is permissible in Islam, but you need to maintain certain guidelines.

As narrated by Jabir Ibn Abdullah –

Prophet Muhammad PBUH mentioned:

“When one of you asks a woman in marriage, if he can look at what will induce him to marry her, he should do so. He (Jabir) said: I asked a girl in marriage. I used to look at her secretly until I looked at what induced me to marry her. I, therefore, married her.

- Sunan Abi Dawud 2082

So, as potential spouses, you may look at each other. However, you cannot stare or ogle. There should be a certain number of times that you may look at each other. Both of you should possess the fear of Allah SWT and keep in mind that the purpose is to build a prosperous Islamic family.

Take some time to recite these duas to thank Allah if you have found your desired spouse.

Conclusion

Islam puts a lot of emphasis on marriage. You will find lots of verses about marriage in Islam. Allah SWT has mentioned many times within the Quran to marry eligible single Muslims. By getting married, you’re fulfilling half your deen and fulfilling the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad PBUH.

Marriage is a sacred relationship between a man and his wife. This is mentioned within the Holy Quran and many other Islamic scriptures. We have discussed some of the Quranic verses about marriage in this article.
