Islam teaches us to honor, respect, and obey our parents. You are taught to always respect their opinion and be kind towards them. We shall give you insight into several Quranic Verses about parents. ‏ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا۟ بِهِۦ شَيْـًۭٔا ۖ وَبِٱلْوَلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَنًۭا وَبِذِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْيَتَمَىٰ وَٱلْمَسَكِينِ وَٱلْجَارِ ذِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْجَارِ ٱلْجُنُبِ وَٱلصَّاحِبِ بِٱلْجَنۢبِ وَٱبْنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَمَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَنُكُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ مَن كَانَ مُخْتَالًۭا فَخُورًا ‎

Transliteration

wa-uʿ’budū l-laha walā tush’rikū bihi shayan wabil-wālidayni iḥ’sānan wabidhī l-qur’bā wal-yatāmā wal-masākīni wal-jāri dhī l-qur’bā wal-jāri l-junubi wal-ṣāḥibi bil-janbi wa-ib’ni l-sabīli wamā malakat aymānukum inna l-laha lā yuḥibbu man kāna mukh’tālan fakhūra

Meaning

And worship Allah And (do) not associate with Him anything, and to the parents (do) good, and with the relatives, and the orphans, and the needy and the neighbor (who is) near, and the neighbor (who is) farther away, and the companion by your side and the traveler and what possess[ed] your right hands. Indeed, Allah (does) not love (the one) who is [a] proud (and) [a] boastful.

– Surah Nisa; Verse; Verse 36

  ‏ وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُ وَبِٱلْوَلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَنًا ۚ إِمَّا يَبْلُغَنَّ عِندَكَ ٱلْكِبَرَ أَحَدُهُمَآ أَوْ كِلَاهُمَا فَلَا تَقُل لَّهُمَآ أُفٍّۢ وَلَا تَنْهَرْهُمَا وَقُل لَّهُمَا قَوْلًۭا كَرِيمًۭا

Transliteration

waqaḍā rabbuka allā taʿbudū illā iyyāhu wabil-wālidayni iḥ’sānan immā yablughanna ʿindaka l-kibara aḥaduhumā aw kilāhumā falā taqul lahumā uffin walā tanharhumā waqul lahumā qawlan karīma

Meaning

And has decreed your Lord, that (do) not worship except Him Alone and to the parents (be) good. Whether reach with you the old age one of them, or both of them, then (do) not say to both of them a word of disrespect and (do) not repel them, but speak to them a word noble.

– Surah Al Isra; Verse 23

The aforementioned verse from the Holy Quran mentions you should utter no words of disrespect toward your parents. If you honor & respect your parents, this will please Allah SWT as well. Respecting your parents also means you’re following the commands of Allah SWT.

Many surahs in the Holy Quran stress the importance of parents. These are –

1. To remain dutiful towards your parents

وَبَرًّا بِوَالِدَيْهِ وَلَمْ يَكُن جَبَّارًا عَصِيًّا

And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant.

– Surah Maryam; Verse 14

2. Treat your parents well and take care of them during old age

وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا ۚ إِمَّا يَبْلُغَنَّ عِندَكَ الْكِبَرَ أَحَدُهُمَا أَوْ كِلَاهُمَا فَلَا تَقُل لَّهُمَا أُفٍّ وَلَا تَنْهَرْهُمَا وَقُل لَّهُمَا قَوْلًا كَرِيمًا

And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], ‘ uff,’ and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.

– Surah Al Isra; Verse 23-24

3. To ask Allah SWT to have mercy upon your parents

وَاخْفِضْ لَهُمَا جَنَاحَ الذُّلِّ مِنَ الرَّحْمَةِ وَقُل رَّبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, ‘ My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.’

– Surah Al Hijr; Verse 88

4. Treat your parents well at all times

 قُلْ تَعَالَوْا أَتْلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ ۖ أَلَّا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا ۖ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا ۖ وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَوْلَادَكُم مِّنْ إِمْلَاقٍ ۖ نَّحْنُ نَرْزُقُكُمْ وَإِيَّاهُمْ ۖ وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ ۖ وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ وَصَّاكُم بِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ ‘

Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. [He commands] that you not associate anything with Him, and to parents, good treatment, and do not kill your children out of poverty; We will provide for you and them. And do not approach immoralities – what is apparent of them and what is concealed. And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason.’

– Surah Al Luqman; Verse 14-15

5. The importance of taking care of your mother and Quranic verses about mothers

وَوَصَّيْنَا الْإِنسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُ وَهْنًا عَلَىٰ وَهْنٍ وَفِصَالُهُ فِي عَامَيْنِ أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيْكَ إِلَيَّ الْمَصِيرُ

And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.

– Surah A l Ahqaf; Verse 15-16

Kindness Towards Parents in Quran

Prophet Muhammad PBUH emphasized the importance of being kind to your parents. Companions of our Prophet once asked him which of the good deeds can a man do that is loved by Allah SWT. Prophet Muhammad PBUH replied –

It was narrated by Al Walid bin Aizar Prophet Muhammad PBUH was asked, “Which deed is loved most by Allah?” He replied, ‘To offer prayers at their early (very first) stated times.’ ” `Abdullah asked, “What is the next (in goodness)?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “To be good and dutiful to one’s parents,”

A child must care for his or her parents when they come of age. This is a fundamental right of all parents. A child must display the following qualities to be rewarded by Allah SWT. Prophet Muhammad PBUH mentioned in a hadith –

“If anyone possesses these three characteristics God will give him an easy death and bring him into His Paradise: gentleness towards the weak, affection towards parents, and kindness to slaves.”

The following are Quranic verses about parents that you should fulfill as children. 

1. Ensuring Ihsan – This means that you take responsibility as a Muslim to get perfection in worshipping Allah SWT –

“Treat your parents kindly and behave with them in a nice and comely manner.”
– Al-Quran [2:83; 4: 36; 6: 151; 17: 23; 46: 15]

2. Ensuring Infaq – Spending piously in the way of Allah SWT

“Spend out of your wealth for the welfare and wellbeing of your parents.”
– Al-Quran [2:215]

3. Ensuring Istighfar – To pray for your parent’s protection in this world and the hereafter.

“Pray for their protection in this world and the hereafter”
– Al-Quran [ 14: 41; 71:28]

4. Fulfill your responsibilities towards your parents during old age

“Do not repel or reproach them, especially when they become old”
– Al-Quran [17: 23]

5. Treat your parents with honor and respect

“Never shout at them but address them in terms of honor and respectfully speak to them, especially when they become old”
– Al-Quran [17: 23]

6. Be humble towards your parents

“Lower to them the wings of humility out of compassion”
– Al-Quran [17: 24]

7. Remain dutiful, kind, and compassionate to your parents

“Be dutiful, gentle, and kind to them, and do not be arrogant or rebellious”
– Al-Quran [19:14; 19:32]

8. Be grateful to your parents

“Be grateful to them”
– Al-Quran [31:14]

9. Give your parents’ company in worldly affairs

“Give them company in the worldly affairs with appropriate courtesy and kindness”
– Al-Quran [31:15]

‏يَٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًۭا وَقُودُهَا ٱلنَّاسُ وَٱلْحِجَارَةُ عَلَيْهَا مَلَٓئِكَةٌ غِلَاظٌۭ شِدَادٌۭ لَّا يَعْصُونَ ٱللَّهَ مَآ أَمَرَهُمْ وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا يُؤْمَرُونَ

O you who believe! Protect yourselves and your families (from) a Fire whose fuel (is) people and stones, over it (are) Angels stern, severe; not they disobey Allah (in) what He Commands them but they do what they are commanded.  
– Surah At Tahrim; Verse 6   ‎-

Quran Verses about Father

Fatherhood is a gift in Islam. Allah SWT showers this gift upon Muslim men. Muslims are required to show utmost attentiveness towards their children. The supplication made by parents brings success to everything that their children do in life and hereafter.

It has been mentioned in Surah Ibrahim –

‏رَبِّ ٱجْعَلْنِى مُقِيمَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِى ۚ رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَآءِ

Transliteration

rabbi ij’ʿalnī muqīma l-ṣalati wamin dhurriyyatī rabbanā wataqabbal duʿā

Meaning

My Lord! Make me an established (of) the prayer, and from my offsprings. Our Lord! and accept my prayer. ‎ – Surah Ibrahim; Verse 40
